Actor. Born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, on July 3, 1962, in Syracuse, New York. Leading star of Hollywood films of the 80's and 90's. As a boy he suffered from dyslexia and from the breakup of his nomadic family, which kept him moving around the continent, living for brief spells in Louisville, Ottawa, and Cincinnati, where he attended a Franciscan seminary. Finally settling with his remarried mother in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, he got into acting in high school after a knee injury forced him to quit the wrestling team. Eager to get started, he moved to New York City n 1980 and eked out a living as a busboy and maintenance worker before his film debut in Endless Love (1981). At first he was considered just another of Hollywood's "Brat Pack", the new wave of juvenile leads that swept the American screen in the 80's. But in role after role, he proved to be more than just a handsome young man with a winning smile and by the end of the decade he had developed into a genuine superstar. After a strong, mature performance in Rain Man (1988), he was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Actor for his portrayal of Vietnam vet Ron Kovic in Born on the Fourth of July (1989). Divorced from actress Mimi Rogers; married Nicole Kidman.
