
Actress. Born on March 20, 1958, in Conyers, Georgia. Petite (5'2"), accomplished leading lady of the American stage, TV and films. She began acting in her freshman year in high school, and appeared in upstate New York summer stock when she was 16. Formally trained at Carnegie Mellon University, she made her screen and off-Broadway debuts in 1981. On stage, she established her reputation in four Beth Henley plays, getting her big break when she took over Mary Beth Hurt's role in Crimes of the Heart. On screen, she scored big in Broadcast News (1987) for which she was named the year's best actress at the Berlin Film Festival and by the New York as well as the Los Angeles film critics. Joel and Ethan Coen are said to have written Raising Arizona specifically with her in mind. She scored another personal triumph in Miss Firecracker (1989), reprising her stage success. In 1993 she reinvigorated her film career with her critically acclaimed, Academy Award-winning performance as a mute woman in Jane Campion's The Piano. On TV she won an Emmy for Roe vs. Wade.
