Meryl Streep - Biography

Actress. Born in 1951, in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. Radiant, expressive, talented leading lady of the American stage and screen. At 12 she took voice lessons for opera but developed an interest in acting while attending high school and began playing leads in school productions. She later majored in drama at Vassar, spent a term at Darthmouth studying costume design and playwriting, and went on to graduate work at the Yale School of Drama. After playing leads in several productions of the Yale Repertory Theater, she came to New York and appeared successfully in a number of Broadway plays, including Tennessee Williams' "27 Wagons Full of Cotton", for which she was nominated for a Tony Award. In 1976 she joined the New York Shakespeare Festival, and in the following year made her screen debut in Julia. She was nominated for an Oscar as best supporting actress for The Deer Hunter (1978) and won the National Society of Film Critics Award for that role. It was her first of many Oscar nominations. She first won for Best Supporting Actress for her work in the divorce drama Kramer vs. Kramer (1979). She then won for Best Actress for her role as a Polish woman who must choose which of her children lives in Sophie's Choice (1982). Throughout the decade of the 80's, Streep tackled a wide variety of dramatic roles, becoming well-known for her uncanny ability to mimic accents. She turned to comedic roles in the late 80's and 90's. She excelled as a comedienne, from her first, semi-successful effort She-Devil (1989) to the special effects-laden blockbuster Death Becomes Her (1992). One of Hollywood's most esteemed actresses, she also won the Emmy Award for her performance in the 1978 TV drama "Holocaust".
