Actor, director. Born on February 28, 1957, in Brooklyn, New York, educated at SUNY, New Paltz, Yale (M.F.A., Drama). Edgy, brooding supporting player of screen and stage. Son of a carpenter, he established himself in a variety of regional and off-Broadway performances, including Danny and the Deep Blue Sea for which he won an Obie.
Since his film debut in 1980, he has specialized in simmering urban types, notably the bigoted Brooklyn pizza man in Do The Right Thing and the haunted New York playwright in Barton Fink. His directorial debut Mac, based on his father's experience as a Queens home builder in the 1950s, was widely praised. Married actress Katherine Borowitz.
